Cabinet of Children’s rehabilitation
Specialized Hospital Pro-Familia in Rzeszów is the only institution in the Subcarpathia, where in our youngest patients from the first days of their life, there are used two methods of rehabilitation - Vojta method and NDT-Bobath. These are the two leading methods of rehabilitation of infants and children with developmental disorders.
During the newborn's stay on the ward, parents are educated in the field of child developmental stimulation and proper care, according to the rules of modern pediatric rehabilitation. After leaving the hospital, parents have the option to continue baby's therapy by meeting with physiotherapist in the Cabinet of Children's Rehabilitation in Specialist Clinic.
The youngest patients are taken care by:
- physiotherapist Joanna Jędrzejek, a licenced Vojta method therapist
- physiotherapist Agnieszka Dębosz, a licenced NDT-Bobath therapist
The Vojta method and NDT-Bobath are an effective therapeutic agent for premature babies and in a various diseases of the neuromuscular, such as the obstetric brachial plexus palsy, meningomyelocele, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, torticollis, congenital foot and also in children with asymmetry within the muscles of the trunk and neck. The need of early introduction of therapy is dictated by the highest plasticity of the brain during the first months of baby's life. The first three months are the best to start practicing, no later than up to the fifth month of life.
This method works by stimulating the brain to activate the innate patterns of movement and transfering this activity to muscles of the trunk and limbs. For this purpose, the therapist performs a precise pressure to specific body zones in appropriately selected starting position, which in a reflex triggers complexes of movements that are not depended on child’s will: “reflex rolling" and “reflex creeping”. Triggering these “reflexive ” reaction causes dislocation of existing or creating new connections in the central nervous system. Through these exercises, we influence on the improvement of posture and movement abilities of the child. The effectiveness of therapy by Vojta method requires the active participation of parents and caregivers who, after proper training by qualified therapist, can every, day practice with a child. The need of early introduction of therapy is dictated by the highest plasticity of the brain during the first months of baby's life. The first three months are the best to start practicing, no later than up to the fifth month of life.
The main objectives in the NDT-Bobath concept are the observation of the child and analysis of the opportunities and existing restrictions in the implementation of the function presented by him. According to the development needs of child, physiotherapist practicing with a whole child’s body and does not move the selected limbs. Thanks to this therapist delivers sensory and motor experience and the child is dynamically activated. During the properly conducted exercise session stimulation involves all the senses favorably influencing the development of their integration. Help should be such as to ensure maximum and active participation of the child, while not induce abnormal responses resulting from too much exertion or stress. Each movement is properly prepared and combined with the movement of body weight and center of gravity. The nature, pace and rhythm of exercises are chosen individually.
Streamlining of NDT-Bobath concept is particularly useful in the treatment of infants and children because it can be easily integrated into their biological rhythm of the day. Properly performed treatments, feeding, baby wearing or playing with it are suitable moments for stabilization and continuation of movements practiced by a psychotherapist. The therapist instructs parents and caregivers to understand the problem and difficulties occurring in their child and know how to serve recommendations to exercise at home. These recommendations should serve perpetuating work during therapy and they can interfere with the role that parents should do to educate their children. The conditions of proper cooperation in a team, which also includes parents, a good knowledge of the principles on which improvement of methods of NDT-Bobath are based.
The basic principles and objectives of improvements are:
- quality of motion, so the goal of therapy is to assist the progress and achievement of the movement as close as possible to normal
- influencing muscle tone (reducing the increased and increasing low voltage)
- eliminating abnormal reflex reactions.
Kinesio taping method
Kinesio taping method involves the analysis of postural and functional dysfunction of patient, choosing the appropriate techniques and applications of patching special kinesiology tape on selected area of the body, which provides the mechanical stimuli that depends on the type of patch, the method and place of application and has a number of indications. Therapy may assist in correcting the faulty settings of axis joints, normalization of muscle tone and muscle power, improving proprioception and pain relief and improve the flow of lymph. Although kinesio taping is mainly associated with the sport, it can be used in daily work with all patients. Kinesio taping is used also as a adjunctive therapy treatment:
- in pediatric rehabilitation: posture and feet dysfunctions (eg. Congenital clubfoot, valgus feet or valgus knee), asymmetry of the head and trunk in children, weakness of the abdominal muscles, damage of peripheral nervous system (eg. Palsy brachial plexus, facial palsy), post-traumatic assist the work of muscles and joints.
- In gynecology rehabilitation: correctional technique in the case of dehiscence of the public symphysis in pregnancy, cervical and lumbar spine pains during pregnancy (eg. Sciatica), pain in the shoulders, pain after a puncture, headaches, assist of antiedematous therapy
By using this method treatment is continued for 24h, drastically cutting the recovery process.
Individual balance, coordination, corrective and resistance exercises for children in preschool and early school age that shape the correct posture, develop capacity for coordination and muscle strength, promote normal development of the child. In the therapy we use elements of the Sensory integration therapy, sensorimotor using unstable surfaces, obstacle courses, fittings and rehabilitation balls. Corrective exercises are performed according to the method of PNF and three dimensional manual feet therapy.
Physical therapy is one of the physiotherapy methods, in which few different physical factors are influencing to the body – both natural and artificially produced, by which activated biologically process is activated in the tissues of the body. In the Cabinet we offer a wide range of physiotherapy treatments that are individually matched to the patients and can be merged with kinesio taping method during one therapy session. Offered treatments include electrotherapy (diadynamic, electrostimulation, galvanization, iontophoresis, Träbert currents, interference currents, Kotz currents, TENS, tonolysis), ultrasound and treatments with Bioptron lamp and
Viofor or magnetic stimulation system Viofor JPS, which based on a specific impact on the body of ELF magnetic field induction of low value. As a result of this interaction there are activated mechanisms in the body to safely restore its natural balance, leading to improve health and alleviation or cure of many ailments. The advantage of this method is analgesic and regenerative effect, making it excellent addition to the basic treatment.
School for parents
All new parents whose children reside in the Ward of Neonathology are welcomed to meeting with our experts at the School for Parents. During the meeting head of the Ward, MD Janusz Witalis and physiotherapists – Joanna Jędrzejek and Agnieszka Dębosz support parents by giving them the most important information in the field of child development stimulation as well as proper care, consistent with the principles of modern pediatric rehabilitation.
Parents are welcome on Mondays and Thursdays at 14:15. Parents of premature children – on Fridays at 12:30. Meetings are held on the second floor of the hospital.
